A weekend in York- part 2

Sunday started off with another substantial breakfast.......before walking into York to visit York Castle Museum......which came highly recommended by a friend........and turned out to be one of the best 'small' museums I've ever been to.....we ended up spending over 3 hours there.
I did manage a few [very poor quality] photos.
There was an entire Victorian high street
with a whole variety of shops.....some of which you could go inside.......and some just shop fronts
various room sets through the ages
the most amazing displays of toys
but it becomes a bit disconcerting when you remember playing  with the toys that are now in museums!!!!! Anyone remember playing this on their TV??????

or how about this?????
So it seemed quite apt that they also had a brilliant 60s themed room
and yep......that 'record player' on the right.......is the first one I ever owned.....I'm now beginning to feel ancient!!!!! I've probably still got some of those records as well.
And I had to take this one.......as it's a photo of the 'mods' riding through our town in 1964.....where they sometimes held pitched battles with the 'rockers' on their motorbikes.
the final part of the museum was below ground.......in what had been the prison......and in each cell there were speaking holograms....telling us what had happened to them....usually something very unpleasant.
A 'must visit' if you are ever in York.
And in the afternoon......at Castle Howard
google photo
we finally found a Christmas market worth visiting......small....but with some lovely stalls of handmade items.....and lots of foodie stuff to try and to buy
and so ended......a very enjoyable....if exhausting weekend.

I have found that the smaller museums are more interesting to me than the larger ones run by institutions.

I have just enjoyed a lovely tour of York, thanks to you, Jacky. :o) The place looks amazing, and I'm wondering if Carrie and I will be traveling near there when we visit England next year. I must make note of it and see if we can work it in.

The hologram in the prison looks kind of spooky!

Because both our children went to Sheffield for university we spent 7 years going up and down the A1 dropping them off or picking them up. Every time we said, 'one day we will detour and spend a weekend in York.' We never did! Looks like we missed out on an interesting place. Thanks for the tour!

I love your pictures of the Victorian street: when I was a little girl my Mum had a very old guidebook to this museum and I used to love to look at the pictures of the street and promise myself I'd get there one day. It lived up to my expectations!
