Bonfire Parade

Sussex has a tradition of Bonfire Societies......they hold a series of Bonfire Parades throughout September and October.......culminating in the vast one at Lewes on November 5th.....the celebrations mark both Guy Fawkes Night.....and the burning of 17 Protestant martyrs in Lewes High Street in the 1500s. All the societies take part in torchlit processions in each town......followed by fireworks and the burning of an effigy......at the same time thousands of pounds are raised for local charities.
This Saturday was the turn of our town.
Note the unpopularity of politicians and bankers.....they went up in flames this year!!!

This year's parade had perfect weather........clear and not too cold.......and was massive.....I've never seen so many people in town.......we were in danger of being crushed a few times......and I didn't manage to get photos of the fireworks.......but it was a great evening......and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

That looks like so much fun! All we have here is a pumpkin festival. Well, we do have fireworks on the 4th of July.

It DOES look like a lot of fun too, Jacky. I'm sure it will be a scrap layout sometime soon too

Happy Monday

I'm so jealous Jacky, bonfires over here are not things of enjoyment for many people. The photos are brilliant!

Great photos Jackie - I love bonfire night! You even managed to get a photo of a person dressed as a pirate (save it for next year's Rinda scavenger hunt!)

Yes, I spotted those pirates too :)

The bonfire tradition round here certainly isn't like this one - with ours, anyone sensible stays firmly indoors well out of the way - this looks like a lot more fun!

Funnily enough, we have our personal bonfire tradition .. my Dad lights one every Queen's Birthday long weekend ... nothing to do with Her Majesty, it's the time of the year down here that is appropriate ... anyway, it is around the time of the kids birthdays and it is always cause for much entertainment!

Looks like a HUGE weekend!

I love reading about traditions and customs that we don't celebrate here in the states. It looks like lots of fun, and I spotted a pirate which I never did see for Rinda's scavenger hunt!

Good morning Jacky . . . I'm a Sussex girl too! Went to our local bonfire night on the 7th Oct!

I'm a cardmaker, but your scrapbook pages are very interesting.

Just dropped by to say CONGRATS on winning over at Kath's blog.
