The Eternal City

Rome.....The Eternal City.....every street, every square, every corner.....containing some amazing piece of architecture......so much to see and take in it's quite mind boggling.......and definately can't be done in a day........a city to return to.......preferably in the spring or autumn.......as the heat and crowds were overwhelming.
We toured the city in an open topped 'hop on hop off' bus......trying to take photos from it was a feat in itself!!
We found a reasonably priced cafe to have an 'authentic' pizza lunch near the Trevi Fountain before hopping back on the bus......at this point....having a paddle would be so tempting!!

Sadly the English commentary via earphones wasn't brilliant......so we weren't always sure what we were seeing!!

The Colliseum has long been on my wish list to see.......and was truly amazing......towering above us.......but by the time we arrived there in the afternoon.......we were all over heated, tired and ratty.......desperately needing shade and a cool drink.......we didn't go inside......as queueing for an hour in temperatures of over 40 celsius had lost it's appeal by then!!!! A return trip is a must.

Our final visit of the day was St Peters Square and Basilica.......vast and imposing........and a quirky little fact if you're going to Rome......the Vatican shop has one of [only about 3] public toilets in Rome.

Yikes! Hot as Hades and only 3 toilets in all of Rome. Someone should open a stand and sell Depends!

Such fun you will have scrapping all these great photos. I was in Rome 40 years ago as a student. Your photos brought back a lot of memories. Don't recall finding a bathroom as a problem, though it must have been!

Now that is a useful fact, worth storing away for the future. I think we ended up in McDonalds when we did our "Rome in a Day"

Your photos are great..really clear :)

We loved Rome! Spent about four days there, I think, so it was manageable. The Vatican museums were a real highlight for me, as were leisurely dinners al fresco.

Hi Jacky! Amazing photographs and it looks like you've had a wonderful holiday (minus the washing on return :D)! Roma, so beautiful and still high up on my places to visit, one day I'll get there. Chris x

I've so enjoyed my blog catch up, Jacky - your posts have brought back so many happy memories of our cruise two years ago! I may need to blog a nostalgic post so you can compare my photos with yours :-)

I found the heat in Rome a bit overwhelming too, but it was a wonderful place to visit. The Colosseum was fab (we did manage to get inside, but we went earlier in the day and as part of a group). We drove past St Peter's but didn't have time to stop there, sadly - we're hoping to go back next year, as The Doctor has some research to do in Rome xx
